Major Anacortes Land Grab by Swinomish Tribe

The Swinomish Tribe is claiming jurisdiction over an area in Anacortes that includes the two refineries.  This unprecedented action is strongly objected to by Skagit County.

There's little doubt the Swinomish did this to prevent the Sammish Indian Nation from locating a casino and a gas station on land the Sammish  purchased in Anacortes. The casino location is clearly labeled on the followng map. The Swinomish intend to expand their reservation to the areas north and west of the red line.

The Swinomish don’t want the competition, so they see annexation as a means to prevent that. They are already claiming jurisdiction over the land. Believe they may also want to punish Anacortes for acquiescing to the Sammish casino and it’s no secret they are often at odds with the county.  They may have acted now because they figure the Trump administration may not be as accommodating to tribal desires as the current one.

The Skagit County Commissioners have written letters to head of the Northwest Region of the Bureau of Indian Affairs explaining their opposition and to Fidalgo Island residents who may be affected.  Those letters along with an expanded version of the above map may be accessed at the following link.

If the land is annexed according to the Swinomish Tribe's proposal, millions of dollars of tax revenue will be lost to the City of Anacortes and Skagit County.  This area's economy will be devastated.  At the same time, businesses and home owners will lose their constitutional right to representative government and due process.

Brandon Stone, reporter for the Skagit Valley Herald, filed the following which appeared in the paper's December 3rd edition.

Mr. Stone was able to elicit comments from Swinomish Tribal Chairman Brian Cladoosby, who objected to the county's and the Sammish Tribe's objections to his land grab.

Mr. Cladoosby is not exactly someone who plays well with others.  He is on record as claiming his intention to control Skagit basin land use by controlling the water supply.  He was also responsible for the illegal "What's Upstream" propaganda campaign that attacked the farm community in the state and attempted to influence state legislators with federal tax dollars.  The expansion of the tribe's reservation boundaries is his latest outrage.
